From Excess to Excellence: How Kuleana Macadamia Nut Oil Came to Be
Every bottle of Kuleana Macadamia Nut Oil starts with a question that changed everything: what do you do with nuts nobody wants?
2015: A Question About Waste Sparks an Idea
In 2015, local macadamia nut processors on Hawaiʻi Island reached out to our founders, Bob and Kelly King, with a practical problem. Their operations produced excess nuts that weren't making it to market — nuts that would otherwise end up in the landfill. Could they be pressed for biofuel instead?
Bob and Kelly took the question seriously, and their research led them somewhere unexpected. Macadamia nut oil wasn't just useful as a renewable fuel source — it had real potential as a natural cosmetic oil and a versatile culinary oil, prized for its rich flavor and nutrient density.
That insight became the seed of a new business. The Kings built a small crushing mill next to their biodiesel refinery on Hawaiʻi Island and began producing small batches of cosmetic-grade macadamia nut oil. Maiden Hawaiʻi Naturals, LLC was born — a company rooted in resourcefulness, not waste.
As demand grew, so did the operation. Production scaled up to include culinary-grade oil, sold to local restaurants and retailers across the islands who recognized what the Kings had discovered: this wasn't a byproduct. It was a premium ingredient hiding in plain sight.
2024: Growing a Circular Economy Across the Islands
Nearly a decade later, that small mill has grown into something much bigger.
In early 2024, the Kings announced a major expansion of their agricultural operations to Kauaʻi, including:
- A new crushing mill with the capacity to process 40 tons of seeds and nuts daily
- Scaled-up farming across 1,000+ acres of formerly fallow agricultural land
Today, our team across the state is demonstrating what a community-based model of regenerative agriculture and renewable energy can look like in practice. It's a poster child for the circular economy — one that supports food security, clean energy, and green jobs throughout Hawaiʻi.
Why We Press the Way We Do
Most conventional oils are heavily processed — extracted at high heat, treated with harsh chemicals, and stripped of nearly everything that made the original ingredient worth using in the first place. The result is oil that's clear, odorless, and largely depleted of nutrients.
We do it differently.
Our premium virgin oils are produced naturally using an expeller press, which mechanically presses the nuts with no additives or preservatives. That process preserves the oil's natural flavor, aroma, color, and nutrients — exactly as nature intended.
And true to where this story started, nothing goes to waste. The residual "meal" left over after pressing is repurposed as a high-protein ingredient for local livestock feed. From nut to bottle to farm, our production process is designed to be zero-waste, start to finish.

From a Waste Question to a Kitchen Staple
What began as a conversation about excess nuts became a company built on the belief that nothing in Hawaiʻi's agricultural system should go to waste — not the nuts, not the land, not the opportunity to build something regenerative. Every bottle of Kuleana Macadamia Nut Oil carries that story with it, from Bob and Kelly's first small batches to the mill now running on Kauaʻi.
